Ready to Propose? 4 Key Things You Need to Prepare

So, you’re ready to propose? Congratulations! You’ve reached an exciting milestone in your relationship that hopefully marks the start of a new chapter for you and your partner.

There’s no right or wrong way to propose, as it’s a totally personal experience. But if you’re looking for a few pointers to get you started, then read on – here, we list the essentials you’ll need for this magical moment.

A Location

Often, people choose to propose in a place that’s meaningful to them as a couple – it might be the spot where you had your first date, where you said “I love you”, or perhaps linked to a hobby you share or a location that’s been important to you in the past. Or, you might choose to pop the question on holiday, where you can enjoy a romantic break as a newly-engaged couple. The location sets the tone for your whole engagement story, so it’s important to get right.

Remember to place your partner at the heart of your proposal. You stand the best chance of getting a “yes” if they’re happy and comfortable, so don’t propose in the middle of dinner at a restaurant if they’re a very private person.

What you’re going to say

Ahead of the big moment, take some time to think about what you want to say. There’s no need to have a perfect long speech prepared (unless you want to), but you should put some effort into considering how you want to ask this person to spend the rest of their life with you.

Even if you want everything to be quite spontaneous, it’s still worth giving some thought to general themes ahead of time, and then you can use the bits that feel most relevant on the day itself.

A ring (or alternative)

The majority of people propose with an engagement ring – it’s a classic choice, and taking the time to choose the perfect one can be a lovely way to show your partner how much they mean to you.

However, it can be a lot of pressure to choose the right ring, especially if you’re not sure what your future spouse would like. Popping the question with a placeholder ring, or even something fun like a candy ring can be a great way to have that ‘proposal moment’ without the commitment of an expensive piece of jewelry they may or may not like. Then, after they’ve said yes, you can choose a ring together, or even design a custom one.

A way to take a photo

This is an exciting moment in your life, so it’s natural for you to want to capture that excitement by taking a photo either right after you’ve asked the question or even during – many couples nowadays like to set up a covert camera to capture the whole experience.

Of course, you can do this yourself, and this option does give you the most privacy for what is quite an intimate event. Alternatively, if you want to get high-quality, reliable photos, your best bet is to hire a professional photographer. That way, you don’t have to worry about whether the camera is working, or try and take an awkward selfie – you’ll have proper proposal photos.

If this sounds like something you want to do, then make sure to organise this ahead of time. Setting the time and location will be extra important, so the photographer can be in the right place.

Set the scene for this next stage of your relationship

Your proposal is a story that you’ll tell for many years to come. Putting some thought into the planning and making it exactly right for you and your partner is well-worth the effort, so you can enjoy the big moment and look forward to your wedding day.
