What’s in Your Kit – Vendor Spotlight – Hair & Makeup

If you haven’t heard, a lot goes into planning an event… especially a wedding. While a wedding can very much be done as a DIY, often any big event involves vendors. Since we spend so much time with fellow vendors, we thought we’d take some time to ask them what goes into getting ready for a wedding.

Welcome to “What in My Kit”. Amative Blogger Katie (that’s me) sat down [virtually] with some of our best vendor friends to ask them seven important questions. To highlight each of our vendor friends, we’ll be featuring them over the next month. This week we’re featuring Hair & Makeup with Jessica Comisky & Ashley Ancheta.

Before getting into their answers, here are the questions we asked them.

  1. What are your must-have items in your kit on a wedding day?
  2. What’s your favorite item in your kit?
  3. Is there anything you carry with you that you’ve never needed but you just can’t take out of your bag?
  4. What’s the weirdest thing you carry?
  5. Do you have any funny stories to share about how you’ve used what you had in your kit to McGuyver your way out of an emergency on a wedding day?
  6. How long does it take you to prep and pack for a wedding?
  7. How can couples get in touch with you? (Social media, website, phone, email, etc.)

Hair – Jessica Comisky

Jessica did a beautiful job with the hair for Alli & Trevor’s wedding.

What are your must-have items in your kit on a wedding day?

“I have a really large hair kit, it is about a 3-foot rolling trunk that must weigh at least 75 pounds if not more.  In there I have many curling irons and hair tools but what I must have if that got lost/stolen and I had a wedding to do… one-inch barrel curling iron, brown bobby pins, one teasing comb, one bottle of hair spray.  These are the bare minimum.”

What’s your favorite item in your kit?

“I have a magnetic bobby pin bracelet that looks like a leather bracelet.  It is not a mandatory item, but by far one of my most favorite items and the only ONE wedding I didn’t have it for, I felt so lost the whole time not knowing how to collect and hold bobby pins, lol.”

Is there anything you carry with you that you’ve never needed but you can’t take it out of your bag?

“Cough drops, heat resistant glove.”

What’s the weirdest thing you carry?

“Screwdriver and electrical tape. Sometimes I have to repair a curling iron.”

Do you have any funny stories to share about how you’ve used what you had in your kit to McGuyver your way out of an emergency on a wedding day?

“I really wish I had an amazing and hilarious story, but I just can’t think of anything.  The only McGuyvering would be trying to screw back on the top of the curling iron tip with scissors. My stories are usually of being calm in a stressful situation that is very tense.”

How long does it take you to prep and pack for a wedding?

“It can vary if I need to replenish bobby pins and sprays it takes longer.  I would say between 30 mins -1 hour.”

Alli’s hair gave us Disney princess vibes. And Jessica perfectly worked Alli’s signature sunflower into her design.

Makeup – Ashley Ancheta

We loved the makeup Ashley did for Autumn & Justin’s wedding and Jessica’s hair design was the perfect compliment to Autumn’s lacy dress.

What are your must-have items in your kit on a wedding day?

“There are SO many answers to this question besides the obvious like foundation, eye shadows, blush, contour, mascara….and so on. Besides all of those staples, I really do love to have my Glamcor light. I never know what the lighting will look like in the provided space for makeup so this item is a must everywhere I go.  I also like to have a wide range of brushes, multiple styles of lashes, and a lot of small items that combine to make a successful work day like q-tips, makeup wipes, disposable makeup wands, and tissues.”

What’s your favorite item in your kit?

“I have so many favorite items in my kit, so I’ll give you a couple. Danessa Myricks Cream Palette is a very versatile product that can be used as lip, cheek, or eye color and costume blended. Inglot duraline is a mixing liquid that can turn other products into waterproof liners. 4K WET is a makeup liquefier that transforms a regular liquid foundation into an airbrush foundation. Lastly, Smashbox Insta-Matte is perfect when you want to turn a cream or high shine lip product into a matte finish.”

Is there anything you carry with you that you’ve never needed but you can’t take it out of your bag?

“I have several colorful glitters and chrome foils that rarely get used, but only come out to play for fun photoshoots.”

What’s the weirdest thing you carry?

“I guess I don’t think anything is truly ‘weird’ to carry in my bag, but someone else may not understand why I have some things. One is a small noninvasive women’s facial hair remover. It gently removes the hair in unwanted places and provides a smooth surface for makeup application.”

Do you have any funny stories to share about how you’ve used what you had in your kit to McGuyver your way out of an emergency on a wedding day?

“I carry medical grade tape in my kit and gave some to a bride to help tape her nipples and a part of her dress to her body when she was desperate for a solution.”

How long does it take you to prep and pack for a wedding?

“I like to sanitize and clean my brushes and palettes in the evening or before a wedding or big job which takes about 30 minutes. I also make sure I have enough brush sanitizer, alcohol, setting spray, lashes, q-tips, mascara wands, tissues, makeup wipes, cotton rounds, and mascara which are the items that I run out of quickly.  That takes about 30 minutes. I have 2 kids that I need to make sure are all set before I leave for work, so if I am able to prepare ahead of time for a job I try to do so.”
